Opening Plan Updates July 30th 2021

Aloha KCS 'Ohana,

Today we write with additional updates on our program.

Safety Plan

On Monday, July 26th, the Hawai'i State Department of Health released its latest guidance for schools. Along with the CDC, the DOH has prioritized the need for students to attend school in person.

Therefore, our safety plan will continue to remain in alignment with the latest guidance from the CDC and DOH. We will adhere to the core essential strategies that are required for in-person learning. These include the promotion for vaccination among staff and students (12 years and older), having staff and students remain home when sick, proper masking, and hand cleanliness. Lastly, we will implement additional mitigation strategies such as physical distancing, daily classroom and common area sanitation, proper ventilation, and other recommended practices.

Afterschool Programs

In addition to the standard school day, Kihei Charter School will offer afterschool programs for students in grades K-6. Although we hope to launch afterschool programs to accommodate students from all grades, we have decided that it would be safest to start with a smaller program in order to support working families with young children.

An aftercare program will be offered to students in grades K-2 and run from 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm each day. This program will begin on Tuesday, August 3rd.

A Satellite Kihei Youth Center Program will be offered to students in grades 3-6 and run from 2:15 pm - 5:00 pm each day. This program will start on Monday, August 16th, and take place at the Kihei Charter School campus.

Food Service

As you may know, the US Department of Agriculture recently announced that it will be providing free meals to public schools in order to eliminate meal payment transactions and prevent the spread of Covid-19. Although charter schools were initially excluded from this program, it was later announced that each charter school could apply individually. As a result, we are currently in the application process.

As of now, we will not be able to provide free meals at the start of the school year. If we ultimately qualify for the program, which is not a guarantee, we will be sure to notify families immediately. Any meal charges prior to qualification, however, will still need to be covered by families.

In Closing

Please be on the lookout for additional communications from our staff and faculty. As always, we will continue to closely monitor our programs each step of the way.

We look forward to a safe and productive school year for all our 'ohana.

All the best,

The KCS Team
