The virtual event will be streamed on our website - Our Athletics Coordinator, Dave Kannewurf, will host the show. He will recognize all our student-athletes, share a special message for our graduating senior athletes, give out individual and team awards, and show a highlight video of our teams in action.
May 27 - 6:00 pm - Senior Memories and Social Hour (SMASH)
The virtual event will be streamed on our website. Teachers and administrators will host the event. We will begin with a message for our graduating class. Next, we will unveil some of the accomplishments of our senior class, including scholarships and major awards. Lastly, our faculty will read some parting first-hand comments that our very own seniors have written about each other. Following the event families, students and staff will be invited to join a virtual chat room to provide some additional time for live discussion.
May 29 - 5:00 pm - Drive-in Graduation Ceremony
The ceremony will take place at our campus and will be streamed live on our website. The event is classified as a drive-in ceremony. Safety protocols will be in place at all times. Students will have the opportunity to come onto the stage to pick up their diplomas one at a time. Families will remain in their cars and will be able to exit their vehicles when their graduates are on stage to take photos and provide leis afterward. We are still monitoring the regulations in Maui County and thus will provide concrete details for the event no later than Friday, May 22nd.
We look forward to making these events safe and memorable for all the deserving students and families.

Covid 19 School Closure Information

The Superintendent announced the continuation of distance learning through May 28, the last day of the 2019-20 school year.  Consequently, the KCS campus will remain closed for students and we will continue our distance learning program for the remainder of the 4th quarter.

Aloha KCS 'Ohana,
First, our team at Kihei Charter School would like to wish everyone the best during this challenging time.
We write to help clarify any questions that you might have and also notify you of some updates to our distance learning program.
Under the parameters established by state authorities, the activities provided to our students are to be considered "optional enrichment opportunities." This is due to the inequitable nature of learning at home during a time such as this.
Nevertheless, we feel strongly about keeping the bar high for our educational plan. Furthermore, we recognize that some form of virtual learning will likely extend beyond the initial 30 day proposal. Therefore, we plan to monitor and adapt our program in order to maintain student accountability and improve overall student learning.
Starting next week, we will offer live and interactive lessons for our students on a daily basis. Second, student work will be evaluated and given non-numerical grades in PowerSchool. This will serve to provide helpful feedback for students and families along the way. Third, our teachers will make note of daily attendance in PowerSchool. This will not be considered official attendance with respect to truancy, but rather a way to help track student presence and improve communication from the school to home.
Lastly, we also understand the great hardships that many families are facing. We will continue to look at students on a case-to-case basis and do all that we can to support those in need. As always, our goal is to provide the best overall forum for education that we can under the circumstances.
More details will be shared by the directors of each school division.
Please take care,
-The KCS Team

Press Release

Kihei Charter School (A Maui Public Charter School) is pleased to announce that it has been selected as an Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) school - a partnership between Amazon and Edhesive to improve access to computer science education in communities currently underrepresented in the technology field.

According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, by 2020 there will be 1.4 million computer-science-related jobs available and only 400,000 computer science graduates with the skills to apply for those jobs. Many students eager to fill that gap and obtain a high paying job in technology do not have access to computer science in their high schools. Often schools want to offer these courses to their students but do not have access to curriculum and/or teacher support materials.

Amazon and Edhesive are partnering to address this gap by sponsoring teachers and administrators who demonstrate this need and are committed to bringing computer science to their school with access to content such as: Computer Science, AP Computer Science Principles, or AP Computer Science A courses. This content also includes access to support forums for both students and educators new to learning or teaching computer science,, including how students can access college scholarships and internships at Amazon.
