STEM High School
Originally from Maui, Michael lived in New York for 20-plus years where he completed his undergraduate degree at Ithaca College. During his college years he enrolled in a language and cultural immersion program in Seville, Spain and, as a result, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. He then moved to New York City and earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Manhattanville College. For seven years he put his education to work and taught various subjects including language arts, math, social studies and special education within two bilingual middle and high schools in Manhattan. He eventually found his way back to Maui and Kihei Charter School. At KCS, he taught humanities and Spanish for two years at the middle and high school divisions before stepping into an interim position directing the high school. As a result of his hard work and success, Mr. Stubbs was recently named the Director of the High School. As director, his goal is always to uphold the school’s mission and place the well being of students as his highest priority.
My name is Jared Watanabe and I’ve been an Educational Assistant here at Kihei Charter School for over 2 years. I was born and raised here on Maui and graduated with a BA in Psychology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Dana was born and raised in Superior, Wisconsin and is an avid hunter and Green Bay Packer fan. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Bemidji State University and later attained his special education license at University of Minnesota-Duluth and his master’s degree from Mankato State University. Mr. Gravesen has taught math and provided special education services for 20 years working with incarcerated youth/adults for the Minnesota Department of Corrections in three different facilities. Currently, he is providing special education services for the middle and high school.
Mr. MacDevitt, also known as Mr. Mac, teaches 9th grade Health, 10th grade Projects, and will teach 9th grade Biology during the second semester. He was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Ecology and Evolution from UC Santa Cruz (2010), as well as, his Single-Subject Teaching Credential for Science with an emphasis in Biology from Sonoma State University (2014). Mr. Mac moved to Maui in July, 2017. He was a middle school Science teacher in California for the last three years. He has also worked with students of all ages (grades K-12) for many years as a substitute teacher, a summer camp counselor, and as a coordinator with the Boys & Girls Club after-school program. Mr. Mac enjoys music and plays saxophone, guitar, banjo, piano, and drums.
John (Mr. Fitz) currently serves KCS as the High School Physical Science Teacher, Physical Education Teacher, and Athletic Director. He is proud to be one of the first two graduates from the University of Hawaii’s Marine Biology Program. Following his graduation, he set out and accomplished his childhood dream of becoming a boat captain and captaining the Paragon, a well-known entertainment boat in Lahaina. His dream accomplished, he decided to go back to graduate school to earn his Masters Degree in Zoology studying the population genetics of parrot-fish throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Before joining the KCS faculty, Mr. Fitzpatrick taught Human Biology, Biology, Environmental Ecology, and Oceanography at UH Maui College.
Kris was born in India and came to the US after finishing his B.S Degree in Chemical Engineering. He also has earned a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University Of Akron, Ohio. Mr. Murali worked for 29 years at Intel corporation starting as a Process Engineer developing computer chips and other technology products. He also served as a Manager for many other programs and projects and hopes to bring his vast industry experience and project management skills to his teaching of Science and Engineering at the high school.
Matthew was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois. He received his B.A. in Philosophy & Religion with an emphasis in Consciousness from Truman State University in 2012. While attending Truman, he worked as part of a team designing layouts for a laser fabrication company called MetalCrafters. Upon graduation, he spent a year conducting ecological research on the Colorado Rockies for the University of Missouri. Mr. Grose then started a two-year journey teaching English as a second language to the people of Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. His love of tropical living brought him to Maui in 2016, where he began his new career with Kihei Charter School. At KCS. he teaches Introduction to Engineering Design and works as an Educational Assistant at the high school.
Amanda, originally from San Diego, began her scholastic journey at the local community college, where she received her Associates of Arts Degree. She then transferred to California State University, Monterey Bay and after completing two years, transferred to California State University, Fullerton where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics in 2005. After graduation, Mrs. Alexander decided to move to Maui and took the plunge. Her first job was working for Maui Dive Shop; however, she quickly found a job at Kihei Charter School and has been at KCS for 11 years. She currently serves on the High School Leadership Team as the Upper Division Academic Adviser and teaches math and visual arts. She enjoys the school for its autonomy, experiential learning, and the small school atmosphere. Mrs. Alexander was recently married and is getting used to her name change.
Amanda Li Wilson teaches biology and is the college counselor at KCS. She got her undergraduate degree at University of Southern California, where she created an interdisciplinary degree called "Childhood and ADHD". It investigated how education systems should address the needs of students' rather than the students addressing the needs of the education system. Next, together with her sister, she developed and executed an international science and cultural education project called Jungle to Jungle. From there, she earned her teaching certification from the University of Hawaii Manoa. She was always searching for a place that she could teach in a creative and unique way. Now, Mrs. Wilson is happy as can be working with KCS in the pursuit of providing a truly 21st century education to the island. KCS is the only place she has found that truly and continually strives to address the dynamic needs of Maui’s young people in this modern world.
Ellen received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern California and her Masters in Teaching from Loyola Marymount University. Prior to joining the Kihei Charter School ‘ohana, she spent 10 years teaching 6th grade in Lawndale, California and six years as the Education Outreach Coordinator for the Maui Digital Bus. She is credentialed in both the State of Hawaii and California. Mrs. Federoff is originally from Southern California, where she played semi-professional volleyball for many years. She is now a very active paddler as she races outrigger canoes year-round, is the Program Manager of Kihei Canoe Club’s Na Opio program. She also sits on the Board of Directors of Na Wahine Ho`omana, a non-profit women’s support group here on Maui.
Maile was born and raised in Hana and graduated from Hana High School where she developed a deep respect for Hawaiian culture. Her undergraduate studies were at Eastern Washington University, where she received her BA in Education. She also studied at the University of Guadalajara, as well as, various exchange programs to China, Costa Rica, and Ecuador where she stayed with the Cofan Indian tribe. After teaching in Seattle for seven years and earning a Master’s Degree from Lesley in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she returned home. Prior to KCS, Mrs. Getzen taught at Baldwin High School, Hana School, and Kamehameha Schools. She has also had a career in photography, graphic design, fabric design, painting, and illustration. One of the books she wrote and illustrated called, Gift from the Forest, won a national award.
Shadan joined Kihei Charter School in July 2010. As a Senior Chemist she holds a Master of Science degree in Chemistry. She has over 16 years of related experience in the chemistry field. Before joining KCS, she worked with the Environmental Protection Agency in the areas of applied science, research, development, and analysis. She also has many years of experience working in a laboratory, including, serving as a teacher’s assistant and lab supervisor at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. For the past 7 years, Mrs. Shirkhodai has been serving as a Teaching/ Educational Assistant at Kihei Charter School, substituting for math and science teachers (grades 9th – 12th), where she has established a rapport with all students. She is now nearing completion of her math teaching certification. A longtime resident of Maui, she has always enjoyed working with children, and she is very excited to be working at the Charter School.
DrieAnn is as dedicated and passionate about teaching as she is about learning. She provides clear direction, consistent support and creative solutions to ensure that her students are given the best opportunity to learn & grow. Holding a strong belief that busy work is counterproductive, her students can trust/take comfort in knowing that the assignments she tasks them with will be relevant. Having graduated from High School and earning her AA degree at the same year; allowed her to enter Gonzaga as a junior at the age of 18.Over her two years there she performed with the Zag band, played college rugby and graduated with a degree in math and music. Upon graduating from Gonzaga, she crossed an ocean to Maui to start working at Kihei Charter School as an Emergency Hire in April of 2015. Since then, Ms. Peterson has been working at KCS as an Educational Assistant and has been given the opportunity to begin teaching with Consumer Math and Music.
Born in Honduras - raised in Los Angeles, California, Giselle worked in a school setting for four years serving students from a pre-kindergarten to a high school math teacher. She received her Bachelors in Mathematics from California State University, Northridge in 2016. In early 2017,after her honeymoon in Hawaii, she and her new husband made the decision to make Maui their home. Shortly thereafter, she found Kihei Charter School and is working diligently to gain her State of Hawaii teaching license.
Ms. Tara Lindsey is a valued member of the high school Leadership Team as she wears many hats at KCS. She teaches 9th and 11th grade Humanities while also serving as the 9th/10th academic dean, lead 10th grade adviser, and coordinator of the Early College Program. She grew up in Chandler, Arizona and lived in Denver, Colorado before moving to Maui in 2011. Ms. Lindsey holds a Bachelor of Science in journalism and political science from Northern Arizona University (2005), a Master of Arts in political science from the University of Colorado Denver (2009), and a post-baccalaureate certificate in teaching secondary education from the University of Hawaii Manoa (2015). Before teaching at Kihei Charter School, Ms. Lindsey taught lower division college courses for the University of Colorado at high schools in the Denver area, as well as, several remedial college level writing courses at the Community College of Denver.
Tess was born and raised in New York City. She attended Hamilton College where she received a B.A. in Creative Writing. While at Hamilton, she studied abroad in Perugia, Italy and also traveled to Uganda where she taught, fund raised, and helped build Lukolo Primary School. After graduating, she worked for Scholastic Inc. in Manhattan as an Editorial Assistant for Parent and Child Magazine. Always hungry to learn, Ms. Patalano then moved to San Francisco and received her Master’s Degree in English from San Francisco State University where she also taught creative writing classes. She was hit by the travel bug once again, moved with her partner to Seoul, South Korea and taught English as a Second Language for two years at Ansan University. Ms. Patalano is excited to bring her International teaching experience and love of learning to the Kihei Charter family.
